3.7 Engage parents/ carers in the educative process

Describe a broad range of strategies for involving parents/carers in the educative process.

In our Kindergarten class, parent involvement in the educative process is paramount. It is essential that each parent is aware of not only the concepts their child is learning but the variety of ways in which they are learning these skills and concepts. We encourage students to participate in whole class mat sessions, small group work, one on one activities, investigations, planned and child-led provocations as well as inside and outside play. Parents and carers are able to see the learning that takes place through updates, videos and photos placed on SeeSaw. Every week, numerous posts were shared with parents allowing them to see what their child has been up do during the day. They are able to comment on the posts and eventually their child will post their own photos which will open up a wonderful dialogue between parents and their children.

Parents are also involved when they come on parent roster. Parents, grandparents and other extended family are welcome to join us each morning to help with our experiences. We aim to have them to enjoy spending time with their child by completing experiences such as painting, drawing, cutting/gluing and roaming about the room as children our discover and explore our investigation tables.

As I was present in the first weeks of school, I was able to help implement an initiative that welcomed our families into the Kindergarten learning process. Each parent was asked to write on a leaf (or several) some hopes and dreams for their child whilst they are at Kindy. It could be educational, social, personal or anything the parents wanted for their child. This not only welcomed families into the school environment, but promoted a link between our families and school.

Another way parents are involved in the educative process is being able to hear and see their child's reaction to certain questions that have been recorded through the Seesaw program. As well as seeing photos of the learning that takes place, an individual recording of their child can be uploaded. They can hear their child's response to questions posed and can build on this within the home environment.
