1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

In our Kindergarten classroom, we aim to show respect for the original custodians of our land, the Whadjak Noongar people. It is important that each student in our class feels welcome, safe, secure and valued. We have a variety of cultures present in our room including Vietnamese and Indigenous Australian. Inclusivity is a priority as I feel it is so important to create that sense of belonging for all children in the class, not just the majority of students.

Each morning after we have greeted our teachers and said our morning prayer, we sing the welcome song 'Wanjoo'. It has been explained to the students that this song helps us to recognise all children in our class and that the words are in a language called Noongar. The words may be different to ours, but they are just as important and help us to welcome our friends into our learning space each day. We use actions along with the words to help the children make connections to the words.
