2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians

Demonstrate broad knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.

As mentioned, in our Kindergarten classroom we aim to show respect for the original custodians of our land, the Whadjak Noongar people. Through play, provocations and planned experiences, it it hoped that the students begin to understand the importance of showing respect and love towards their peers, no matter what their nationality or culture.

During Term Two, to help promote this diversity and understanding between cultures, an planned invitation was set up to entice the students to begin to think about the cultures in our classroom and how we are all different, yet the same in some ways.

The table presented the students with a world globe, wooden people with various skin tones, Indigenous texts, a house (to help remind them that at Kindy, we are all friends under one roof) and grass to show that the love we show one another also extends outside our classroom. Even thought the Kindergarten students are young, it is still important to promote love between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians and show that even when people may not agree or have different ways of thinking, we all share the world with one another and we can share the respect and love we are shown with those around us.
