1.6 Strategies to support full participation of students with disability

Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability.

In order to differentiate the needs of the students in the Kindergarten class, I decided to incorporate intentional small group experiences that allowed for me to target the needs of certain students. The groups focused on both literacy and numeracy concepts and aimed to either extend or support the children in need.
Oral language development is such an important skill in the early years and as some of our students come from a diverse background, they often need support with their vocabulary and articulation of sounds. In this particular group, the students needed support with naming and describing a familiar scene as well as pronunciation of certain sounds. One student in particular was only able to say 'chippies' (the focus was on food) therefore in future sessions, a vocabulary focus was very much needed.
Some students were also extended in small group numeracy sessions. These sessions targeted the students developing number knowledge and allowed them to further explore numbers through adding 1 digit numbers. The two students identified were able to add the numbers using manipulatives and this can be extended even further later in the year with higher single and double digit numbers. One students was also able to subtract small numbers.
