Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs

Demonstrate broad knowledge of strategies that can be used to evaluate teaching programs to improve student learning.

As part of our numeracy programme, we looked at number misconceptions and building visual images to 5 (at a later stage, we will move onto 10). Over a variety of weeks, we asked the children to show us amounts to 5 firstly using their fingers, the manipulatives and finally they were asked to draw the amounts. We also practiced this skill during our mat sessions and there were multiple opportunities for the students to practice this skill during investigation and activity time.

I then evaluated how the children were able to complete the tasks (after some practice) by writing some anecdotal notes on how they were able to show me these skills.

We then sat down as a team and decided how to further extend those who were able to complete these tasks with ease and scaffold those who needed more support. During our investigation time, we were able target those children who needed to move beyond 5 by asking them to show/make/draw numbers to 10 and for some to 20. In small group targeted practice time, we were also able to guide and support those who were unable to work with smaller numbers and give them further practice.
